Cloud Forests
One of the most unique environments in the world survives on Costa Rica’s mountaintops. Cloud forests like Monteverde’s are formed by a combination of wind and geography. When trade winds flow from the northeast across the warm Caribbean Sea they drive moist air into the Cordillera Tilarán. The slope of the mountains pushes the air upwards allowing it to expand and cool. Since cool air holds less moisture the excess humidity forms tiny droplets, mist, and clouds.
Cloud forests, which really do seem to touch the sky, make up only 1 percent of the global forest area, which makes them a rare ecosystem. Trailing foliage, colorful orchids, verdant vegetation, and the sound of rare birds singing in the forest make this an exciting eco-tourism destination. Think nature and adventure (if you have some gumption) and you will fall for Costa Rica’s incredible cloud forest.
The most famous cloud forest in Costa Rica and perhaps in the world is Monteverde, but there are dozens of other excellent examples at Braulio Carrillo, Los Quetzales, Tapanti, Turrialba, Miravalles, Cerro Chirripo, Tenorio, and other national parks.
The climate of cloud forests is highly variable from site to site, with an average rainfall of c. 2000 mm year−1 and an average temperature of 17.7 °C. In addition, cloud forests are found in seasonal and aseasonal environments alike, both in terms of rainfall and temperature.
